出生於日本東京都大田区大森，成長於東京都清瀬市中里。在1980年代的日本歌謠曲全盛時期，她是最紅的歌星之一，曾有21支單曲與連續13張唱片專輯登上公信榜第一名。

從小就喜歡唱歌的中森明菜一心想成為歌手，從4歲就開始跟著姊姊去學習芭蕾舞，並在13歲那年參加歌星選拔。一開始選拔並不順利，直到在16歲那年演唱山口百惠的《夢先案内人》被已故日本資深作曲家中村泰士賞識。她在那年也成為節目開播以來最高記錄的保持者，受到多家唱片公司指定合作，最後跟華納音樂簽下合約，正式成為歌手。

中森明菜在作為新人，發行第一張唱片前，經紀公司有意將她的名字改為森·阿斯娜（森 アスナ）出道，但是中森明菜依舊希望以自己的本名出道。出道的第一首單曲《Slow Motion》表現平平，後來因為《少女A》帶有點不良少女的叛逆路線加上歌詞有些性暗示跟當時日本歌壇的風格相近，很快就受到矚目。其後翌1983年推出「セカンド・ラブ」、「禁区」登上銷售排行榜第一名，奠定在日本流行歌壇的地位。
